Social Studies
Tomorrow the fifth graders will take the lesson 5 test on the European Explorers. Pages 20-22 in the Interactive notebook as well as the worksheet (2-sided) of the 50 States are due on 11/30. Next week we will be moving into lesson 6, Early English Settlements. By the end of the lesson students will be able to describe what is known about the failed settlement of Roanoke. They will be able to explain key challenges of the settlement at Jamestown. They will also be able to explain key challenges and successes of the settlement at Plymouth. We will be having a review test on the 50 States on 12/14. Students will need to review for this test at home a bit each night.

Language Arts
Students focus on “sentence fluency.” We work on writing complete sentences. The fifth graders are learning how to identify the subject and predicate of a sentence. Spelling homework is due on Monday; our test is also on Monday.

Reading
5th Graders continue reading the novel, Hatchet. We are discussing changes that have taken place in the main character since the beginning of the story. There will be a comprehension quiz tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 30th over Chapters 9-14. We will have a study session in class on Thursday. Students should have completed the study guide, and use it for final review on Thursday night.

Students will learn the difference between weather and climate. Students will learn how the earth is heated in a process called the greenhouse effect. Finally, students will discover how the shape of the earth affects climate, and how the tilt of the earth causes seasons.
