Dear Parents,

We have been working so hard here in the 5th grade. The following is a curriculum update for the week of 2/17 – 2/19.

Happy Valentines Day! Enjoy your Mid-Winter Break!

Math

2/17 – Ch. 6, L. 8 Multiplication Properties

2/18 – Ch. 6, L. 9 Estimate Quotients

2/19 – Check My Progress Review (Quiz on 2/22)

Religion

Last week students thought of goals for Lent in the areas of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. On Wednesday we will write them out and place them on hearts by our prayer table. Thursday and Friday we will continue to learn more about conflict vs. bullying in the Steps to Respect curriculum.

Social Studies

Next Week, we will be having the Chapter 8 Test Facing Slavery on 2/18. The Study guide for this Chapter has been passed out to the students. On 2/19 we will begin our study of Ch. 9, Life in Colonial Williamsburg.

Language Arts

This week in language arts the focus for spelling was words ending with –ed or–ing. Students will take their spelling test when we get back from mid-winter break. In grammar students learned about descriptive adjectives and articles. In writing we began a narrative writing unit where students learned the format of a friendly letter. They will write their own letter next week.

Science

Students did a fantastic job on their inventions. I saw many creative ideas and products!

Students will investigate the niche of the barn owl by dissecting owl pellets. Students will use a bone chart to identify the species of small animals that barn owls prey upon.
