Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

 

This has been a rather short week but we have been very busy! The following is a curriculum update for the week of 2/22 – 26/2016.

 

Religion

Next Wednesday 2/24, 5A students will be receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Each student has made specific goals for Lent in the areas of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Next week, we will begin Chapter 16, Gathered for Mass. The test for this short chapter is on Monday 2/29. We will also continuing our Steps to Respect Curriculum and incorporate the idea into “Forgiveness” when we encounter conflict.

 

Math

2/19 – Check My Progress Review

2/21 – Check My Progress L. 6-9 Quiz

2/22 – Ch. 6, L. 10, Hands On, Divide Decimals

2/23 – Ch. 6, L. 11, Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers

2/24 – Ch. 6, L. 12, Hands On, Use Models to Divide Decimals

 

Social Studies

On Friday 2/19, we will begin Ch. 9, Life in Colonial Williamsburg. Students will participate in an experiential exercise, which will allow them to participate in a part of life from Colonial Williamsburg. Students will complete the Interactive Notebook during class. Test date will be announced next week.

 

Science

Students begin lesson 3 in Ecology: How energy moves through an ecosystem. Students will discover what food chains, food webs and energy pyramids show about energy flow in an ecosystem.

To help students understand these concepts, they will create a food web and energy pyramid for an Antarctic ecosystem

 

Language Arts

This week students took their spelling test on words ending with –ed and –ing. In writing students used their graphic organizers to begin writing a rough draft of their friendly letter. We will end the week by peer editing these and editing a final draft for Monday.
