Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

We are very busy in the fifth grade this week! The following is a curriculum update for the following week.

Reminders:

March 8th – 2nd Trimester Ends

March 14th – 5A & 5B to attend 7:45am Mass followed by a lesson in the church by Father John.

St. Patrick’s Mass – Lead by 5th Graders on Monday 3/18. 8:45am

Math

Monday 3/11: Converting Units of Length

Tuesday 3/12: Changing Improper Fractions to Whole or Mixed Numbers

Wednesday: Lesson 76: Multiplying Fractions

Thursday: Test #14

Religion

Next week on March 14, we will be attending Mass as a class at 7:45am.  After Mass Maggie Judd, who helps both fifth grade classes learn the fifth grade prayers and objects in the church, has organized to have both fifth grades meet in the church with Father John for a lesson on the Mass.

This week we finished the Chapter 18, The Liturgy of the Eucharist.  Next week we will move on to Chapter 19, Answering God’s Call.  In this Chapter we will learn about vocations that serve God and others.

Language Arts

Students are continuing to study root words, prefixes, and suffixes. This week students have been busy examining root words and blending them with suffixes to create new vocabulary words. On Monday, students will have a quiz on suffixes and will have an test of prefixes, suffixes, and root words on Friday. Next week, we will also start brainstorming for our short narrative writing piece. The rubric will be handed out after our brainstorming session is complete. A due date has not yet been determined.

Please remind you child to study for upcoming spelling tests.

Social Studies

The 5th graders will take Chapter 9 test tomorrow 3/8.  Next week we will begin Chapter 10, Growing Tensions Between the Colonies and Great Britain. In this lesson students will learn about the main events that lead up to the Revolutionary War.

Please remind your child to study for the States and Capitals test which will be on March 27th.

Science

Students are investigating the niche of the Barn Owl by dissecting owl pellets. Students will explore how living things get energy. They will break down the roles of producers and consumers in an ecosystem.
