Math – Heuer

Hello Math Families –

Last week’s math plans went out the window – and fell in a pile of snow!  Due to the snow days and the late start on Wednesday, we only had two days of 5th grade math last week so we didn’t accomplish all that I had hoped.  This week we will continue with our study of percents, both greater than 100% and less than 1%,  and decimals, solve real world problems, as well as compare and order percents and decimals.  Mid week we will do a mid-chapter check-in to see how the students are progressing. Please encourage your student to come and see me anytime for extra support if needed.

Social Studies 5

We will begin Chapter 8, Facing Slavery. In this chapter students will learn about the slave trade from the West African perspective. In a series of real-life scenarios, students will discuss in small groups what they would do if faced with these dilemmas. This test will be on 2/22. (If there are more snow days then this plan will change.)

Reading

5th Graders just finished reading Number the Stars, which led to wonderful conversations and questions. Many students are expressing interest in reading more books from that period in history. Our school library is a great place to start! We will jump back into Journeys next week.

Language Arts

Due to our unexpected snow days, this Friday’s Spelling Quiz will be moved to Tuesday February 12th. This way, we will still have our time in class to prepare for the quiz. Thank you for your flexibility! My hope is to give students ample amount of time to study in case they did not bring materials home over the long weekend.

Science

Students Ecology quiz on lessons 1 & 2 has been moved to tomorrow. Students begin lesson 3 in Ecology: How energy moves through an ecosystem. Students will discover what food chains, food webs and energy pyramids show about energy flow in an ecosystem. To help students understand these concepts, they will create a food web and energy pyramid for an Antarctic ecosystem.
