February 14, 2019

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

I hope you are all well. There are some changes and basically everything is moved out in time because of the snow. Let’s pray for no more snow! Please be understanding as we try to get back in the swing of things and get back on a good momentum.

Social Studies 5

We will begin Chapter 8, Facing Slavery. In this chapter students will learn about the slave trade from the West African perspective. In a series of real-life scenarios, students will discuss in small groups what they would do if faced with these dilemmas. This test will be on 3/1. The study guide will be available on SS Google classroom one week prior to the test and usual and a hard copy is always offered during class to any students who want it. This has been standard procedure.

Reading

We used our one class session this week to review and practice the strategy of doing a Close Reading. The students read an article about the amount of screen time that is recommended for young children. They followed the steps of reading and re-reading the article, highlighting unfamiliar/important text, identifying facts and opinions and responding to questions. Please encourage your children to read every day over the break! Enjoy the long weekend.

Lib/Tech

Students can receive up to 60 extra credit points (1pt for each minute) for completing typing practice over the next week.  Regular typing grades will resume after the President’s Weekend holiday.
