Social Studies

We are currently working on Ch. 9 Colonial Williamsburg. The classroom has become Colonial Williamsburg and the students are working in groups to complete the Reading Notes in their Interactive Notebooks and the activities at each center rotation. Students will be visiting the Governor’s Palace, Shoemaker Shop, Bruton Parish Church, The Collage of William & Mary and the Dame School, Raleigh Tavern and the Slave Quarters. The test for this chapter will be on 3/10.

Reading

5th graders have been completing some benchmark assessments, both online and on paper. Students have been encouraged to utilize close reading strategies when reading for these assessments. These assessments are among the few throughout the year for which corrections will not be allowed. On the lighter side, the students have been enjoying participation in Readers’ Theater this week!

Science

Students will learn about natural cycles in an ecosystem. They will discover how carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen and water cycle through an ecosystem.

Language Arts

This week in language arts the focus for spelling was more words ending with –ed and –ing. In grammar students learned about adverbs and practiced identifying them in writing. Students also began a character description writing piece this week. The focus of this piece is using concrete words, sensory details, and dialogue.
