It was so wonderful meeting with all of you at conferences. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

We need to be fast because they will be calling down the entire school soon after. The prayer service will begin at 8:40am. We will have an evacuation drill immediately after the prayer service from the School Hall.***Also if anyone wanted to use a free dress pass, they can change after the prayer service!

Reading

This week, 5th graders have been reading the non-fiction narrative, Everglades Forever. As we work through the story, students are paraphrasing the important idea from each paragraph in the selection. The students have also been exploring a new website: VocabularySpellingCity. This site will allow students to work with both story vocabulary and spelling words using games and activities. Although nothing beats time spent in a good book, the reading websites, ThinkCentral, SpellingCity and News-O-Matic provide a nice mix of opportunities for nightly reading practice. On those light homework nights, try some of these fun activities with your 5th grader!

Language Arts

This week in Language Arts the focus for spelling was compound words. Students continued to learn about conjunctions and complex sentences in grammar.  We began a compare and contrast unit in writing, focusing on the introduction and first body paragraph this week. Students will finish the rough draft of their compare and contrast essay next week.

Science

Students are using hand lenses to practice making detailed observations. In preparation to use microscopes, students will learn the functions of parts of a microscope, and how to adjust light and focus the object being studied.

Social Studies

We are working on Chapter 6, Three English Settlements. Students will be completing the Interactive Notebook for homework due on 12/8. (A study guide will be passed out on 12/5 & 12/6.) We will have a review for the test on 12/8. Students have been preparing for the “Act it Outs” in class, we will perform those on 12/9. This test is on 12/12 for 5A, and 12/13 for 5B.
