Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving. I look forward to meeting with you at conferences. The students lead the conference in 5th grade so I know they are excited to share their work with you!

Science
Students will begin a research-based science unit called Microworlds. In this unit, students will learn to use their powers of observation with the help of magnifying lenses and microscopes to see familiar things in a new way. They are also introduced to a fascinating new world-the cellular structure of living organisms.
Language Arts
This week in Language Arts the focus for spelling was homophones. Students learned about correlative and subordinate conjunctions in grammar and finished their procedure essay unit. Students wrote a polished final draft of the essay and reflected on their work. We will continue our informative writing unit after Thanksgiving break with compare and contrast essays
Social Studies
Next week we will be moving on to Chapter 6, The Early English Settlements. In the Chapter we will learn about Jamestown, Roanoke and Plymouth. We will also be creative making “Act-it-Outs” to better understand the successes and hardships these early settlers encountered.
