Reading

The Selections Test covering the vocabulary and comprehension questions for the Everglades story will be in today’s boomerang. In preparation for this challenging test, we have spent class time discussing and practicing various study strategies. The ThinkCentral site has links for students to go to for vocabulary and rereading practice. In addition, the students were set up on VocabularySpellingCity to practice the vocabulary. In class, the students created a study guide to encourage discussion and deepen understanding of the story. If your child did not do as well as s/he hoped on this test, I would encourage you to have a conversation with them about how they used the study strategies on the nights they were assigned as homework over the past week and a half. I would like to encourage the good habit of using the study strategies, so those students who would like to go back and try at least 3 of the study strategies and make corrections may bring them to me for additional credit.

Social Studies

We are working on Chapter 6, Three English Settlements. Students will be completing the Interactive Notebook for homework due on 12/8. (A study guide was be passed out on 12/5 & 12/6.) We had a review for the test on 12/8. Students have been preparing for the “Act it Outs” in class, we will perform those on 12/9. This test is on 12/12 for 5A, and 12/13 for 5B.

Science

Students will practice using their microscopes. Students will learn how to prepare a wet-mount slide. They will also learn to focus up and down over the surface of an object that has depth. Students will then use their skills to identify unknown specimens using a microscope.

Language Arts

This week in Language Arts the focus for spelling was final /r/ sounds. Students learned about using direct quotations in grammar, and finished their Compare & Contrast essays in writing. Next week, students will do some creative Christmas writing centered around different elements of figurative language.
