Boomerang Newsletter – September 9, 2021

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

We have been working very hard in 5A!

Accessing Google Classroom on your device at home:

Students will need to sign in on their device at home with their Holy Rosary Google Account “in the format psemandris.2025@holyrosaryws.org”. This may mean they will need to “Add User” and then enter their Holy Rosary account information. After the login using their Holy Rosary Google account then they will be able to access all their Google Classrooms. Students have their “login Sheet” glued to the last page of their planner. Their planner should always stay in their filer. The filer should go home every night.

  • Define Providence as God’s loving care for all things
  • Describe stewardship as the way we appreciate and use God’s gifts
  • Examine the gifts of the Earth used in the Seven Sacraments as signs of God’s presence and power.
  • Understand humans’ role in stewardship of God’s creation.

Math – Here is an overview of ALEKS:

Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces is a web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn’t know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course he or she is taking.

ELA

It’s been a wonderful week in 5th grade language arts. As their teacher, I’m proud of the way your children have adapted back to in-person learning. Next week, students will demonstrate understanding by citing evidence and effectively summarizing using “The Fun they Had” by Isaac Asimov. We will also begin reading Wonder together. While we read, students will analyze character development and story structure. We will do a series of writing activities to help foster students’ own narrative writing. Have an awesome weekend, and let me know if you have any questions.

Science

Students will take a quiz next Friday (9/17). It will be based on their experiences with pendulums (also called swingers) and vocabulary notes copy in their 5-subject notebooks.

Social Studies

Students will continue to work on the Ch. 1 Geography Challenge. Students will work with a partner to complete the Geo – Challenge Maps A – D packet. Looking ahead, the test for this Chapter is on (9/23).

Second Step Curriculum – (Friday 2:05pm – 2:50pm)

Growth Mindset & Goal Setting

Lesson 2: My Plan

Students will be able make an effective plan to reach a personal goal, including a way to track their progress.
