Boomerang Newsletter – September 23, 2022

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend at Westfest!

Questions about Westfest T-shirts and/or Wristbands?

If you have a question or did not receive the correct materials for Westfest, please contact Vanessa Dunnigan at vdunnigan@gmail.com for t-shirts or Gina Strand gspelletero@yahoo.com for wristbands and punch cards.  Thank you!

We will continue to take the MAPS Standardized Test. The testing window extends through October 7.  The tests will be taken during Lib/Tech class.  I will also be testing students when I have my homeroom class.  It usually takes two class periods for students to finish one test.

I am including this information below about absences that we had in our “Back to School Night Packet” just as a reminder as we get into the school year. Please review it when you have time!

Covid Absences/Make-up Work Policy

Daily homework is excused except for assessments and long term projects, which may be given an extension as needed. We recommend following the Matrix to complete each math lesson in the text book so your child can be prepared for the tests/quizzes. Also, if students are able to complete any other assignments (Google Classroom) in the various subjects without teacher support please do so. Parents are welcome to pick up materials and Chromebooks from the office as needed.

Absences “Unexcused/Excused/Non – Covid”

It is the student’s responsibility to find out assignments given during periods of absence and make arrangements with the teacher after the absence for making up this work and any tests that may have been given. We suggest checking the “MATRIX”. Please see “Student Handbook” for vacation absence.

Science

Students are beginning a unit titled “Infection Detection.” In this module students are presented with a problem where a large number of students at a school are sick. Students learn about transmission of disease through a simulation and compare communicable and non-communicable diseases. Students design, run, and analyze data from an experiment related to preventing the spread of germs. Students investigate how the body protects us from these germs to keep us healthy.

Social Studies

We have been working on Ch. 1 Geography of the United States. Students have been working to complete their packets in class. Next week we will be correcting these packets in class. We will also be doing a review packet. Both of these packets should be used to study for the test. They are the study guide.  The test for Chapter 1 is on Monday (10/3).

ELA

Hello HRS families! Students are showing great capacity for critical thinking as we practice writing theme statements and identifying important motifs. One aspect of themes that I want to remind students of is that their statements should not mention character names or events in the plot, but rather identify the underlying message (or lesson) about life. We will continue this as we progress throughout the unit. On Monday and Tuesday, students will continue reading The Fun they Had. We will use this text to practice citing evidence and writing commentary in RACE paragraphs. Students will then learn about plot and complete a story arc as their first project. We will use The Lion King to help illustrate plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Have a great weekend.
