September 16, 2022 Boomerang Newsletter

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

We have had a very busy week in 5A! The students are doing a wonderful job learning the routines and procedures of the school. They are also doing well at switching classes. Today in Lib/Tech 5A students began the MAPS Standardized Test. The testing window extends through October 7. We will also be doing testing when I have my homeroom class.  It usually takes two class periods for students to finish one test.

Here is an overview of ALEKS:

Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces is a web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn’t know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course he or she is taking.

9/19  Monday – Ch. 1 Lessons 1-4 Check My Progress Review

ELA

Hello, and happy weekend! On Monday, students will receive their first set of spelling words. I will also put these on the Matrix so you can take a look as well. I will also be sending home a permission slip to view clips of the movie The Lion King, which we use to learn about story elements and plot. We will also continue our study of motifs and themes with the story The Fun They Had. Students will learn how to write a RACE response, which introduces the idea of citing evidence and explaining evidence. RACE is an acronym for: restating the question, answering the question, citing evidence and explaining their evidence. Students will take the spelling test on Friday. Have a great weekend!
