They will explore different diseases and apply their knowledge to identify a mystery illness spreading around a hypothetical school.
Social Studies
On Monday, October 3rd, students will take the Chapter 1, Geography of the United States test. The study Guide has been posted on google classroom.
Next week we will also begin Chapter 4, Why did Europeans Come to the New World?
Essential Question: What did explorers take to and from the Americas during the Age of Exploration?
Overview: We will examine objects from an explorer’s ship. Then we will categorize artifacts as navigation tools, motives for exploration, or new products from the Americas. Students are encouraged to bring in swim goggles as they will become deep sea divers and research scientists while investigating a sunken ship.
Objectives
- Social Studies
- Make connections between exploration in the 1400s and 1500s and exploration today.
- Identify and record key information about objects on an explorer’s ship.
- Categorize eight objects of exploration as a navigation tool, a motive for exploration, or a newly introduced product from the Americas.
- Language Arts
- Find evidence to support & determine the best category to describe an artifact. (reading)
- Present evidence to support artifact categorization. (speaking)
- Develop an argument about primary motives of European exploration. (writing)
Religion
We will be finishing up Chapter 1 this week. Students have been working on the Chapter 1 study guide in class. Later in the week I will review the study guide in class and students can make sure they have the correct information. The test for Chapter 1 will be on Tuesday, 10/11.
ELA
Hello, and happy weekend! Students will get a new set of spelling words next week, which I will put on the matrix. Following this, students will learn the five elements of plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. We will use The Lion King to complete a plot diagram and discuss these elements. Students can expect to complete a theme statement table at home for the story The Fun they Had, as well as an illustrated “book cover” that we started on the previous week. Let me know if you have any questions. Take care!
