Boomerang Newsletter: October 3, 2025

Dear 5A Parents,

We have had a great week in 5A! The students have been working very hard on their materials management  skills this week. I have seen a great improvement since the beginning of the school year.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Ms. Semandiris

Annual Fund Fall Drive:

October is our month-long Annual Fund Fall Drive. All donations to the Fall Fund Drive are 100% tax deductible. Funds help close the gap between the cost to educate ($14,000 per student) and tuition charged. In addition, the students are lucky to have a variety of specialists they visit on a weekly basis. The Annual Fund assists in making these important programs that foster creativity, cultural understanding, and self-expression in our students possible.  Goal is $200,000!

I will also give morning time to practice in 5A. *State Test: Students will need to know where each State is located on the map of the United States. *For the Capitals Test, students will need to know the correct capital when given the name of a State. For example: What is the Capital of Washington State? Answer: Olympia. I will show them an example of the format of the test as time draws near.

Students are continuing to be interested in learning about bacteria, viruses and our immune system. Next week we will be concluding our unit and working through 3 essential questions:

  • Looking ahead: Quiz on Bacteria/ Viruses and Immune System on Monday 10/13

ELA

Hello HRS families! Next week, we will write theme statements for The Giving Tree. Students will learn how to write strong, effective summaries (I will post the format and outline on Google Classroom) that align with theme statements . Students will continue reading Number the Stars (assigned chapters will be on the matrix). Throughout the week, we will discuss the assigned chapters in Number the Stars and begin to make thematic connections in the novel. Students will need to continue to add challenge words to the document I provided (3-4 more per chapter). The unit 2 vocab and spelling test will be on Friday. When figuring out what homework to do, please use the homework column on the Matrix, as opposed to the daily agenda. Please do not read ahead in the novel, and read the assigned chapters if in the homework column. If students want to read more, I recommend checking out a related book from the library.
