Boomerang Newsletter: October 10, 2025

Dear 5A Parents!

We had a great week in 5A. I wanted to remind everyone that we offer “Check-in/Check-out” on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3:05 – 3:20. We help students with organization and planning. We give more in-depth tips for writing in our planners and looking at the monthly calendar as well. Students can also ask content questions or even study with a friend. Ms. McGuigan and I are doing this together in one room so both 5A and 5B friends can be together!

The following is a curriculum update for the week of October 13 – 17, 2025:

Circle of Grace

I will be teaching a Circle of Grace lesson during Religion class next week on coping with stress and pressure (please see attached for information on the Circle of Grace Safe Environment Curriculum).

This lesson describes the difference between stress and pressure. It will assist the children in understanding the difference between healthy and unhealthy stress and pressure. Children will be encouraged to talk to a trusted adult when feeling stress or pressure.

I’ve also attached a handout that I will share with the children which explains how little acts of faith can make a big difference.

Religion

We are working on Chapter 2, Made to be with God. In this chapter we are exploring the sense of longing we all feel as a part of the desire God put in our hearts to be truly happy with Him. We will examine the search for happiness through the Gospel account of the Woman at the Well. We will also be taking a deeper look at grace as a free, loving gift of participation in the life of the Holy Trinity. We began to work on  the study guide for this chapter this week.

Students should have all answers needed for the study guide on their body notes and in their 5 subject notebook.

For our next unit, we will begin a  discussion on environmental engineering. Students will learn important aspects of ecosystems and what happens when human interference causes damage to the system.  Students will learn how engineers work to solve environmental problems like oil spills, and later this month we will be cleaning up our own simulated oil spills.

Social Studies

We are continuing our work on Lesson 2, Native Americans and Their Land. Students have completed the Lesson 2 Reading Notes in class. These are due on Monday (10/13). We reviewed how to write a summary and students wrote three short summaries for this lesson on a Google Slideshow.  Next week we will be focusing on the Inuit’s. We will be learning about them and creating short Act-it-Out’s. Students can wear warm coats, scarves and gloves as props on presentation day! The Act-It-Out’s will be on Monday (10/20). The Study Guide will be on Google Classroom on (10/17). The test for this Chapter will be on (10/24).

ELA

Hello, and happy weekend! Next week, students will complete their first writing assessment on writing a theme statement (using motifs, cause, and effect) and writing a “Williams’ Style” summary. Directions for how to complete these are on Google Classroom. We will also continue to practice citing evidence and writing commentary when responding to questions about literature using the RACE strategy (restate, answer, cite, explain). Students can also expect a new set of vocab/spelling words (unit 3) on Monday. As we continue to read Number the Stars, students should manage their “challenge word” collection. They need at least 3 per chapter, but many students are adding more. This book has led to some deep conversations on friendship, family, and courage in surviving as a civilian during war. I hope you have a great weekend!
