Last week we finished our first unit on Variables. We are currently at the beginning of a Project Lead the Way unit called “Infection Detection”. We have started learning about Bacteria and Viruses, and we will have a hands-on lesson next week talking about transmission and how viruses spread. Students have shown great curiosity and inquiry at the beginning of this unit!
Social Studies
Next week we will be moving on to Lesson 2, Native Americans and Their Land. In this lesson we will explore 4 different environments. Students will be taking a closer look at the Inuit People. They will be preparing for an Act-it-Out which will answer questions about how they adapted to the environment they lived in. We will work in class to answer the questions for the Act-it-out and they will be on Google Classroom as an assignment.
Social Studies
- Trace the migration routes of Native Americans into North America.
- Summarize key features of four environments.
- Identify ways in which the Inuits adapted to their Arctic environment.
Language Arts
- Interpret images through an act-it-out. (speaking and listening)
States Location Test & Capitals Test
We will have a States and Capitals test at the end of May. Students will begin to review for this in October and then it will be an on-going assignment to work on at home. I will also give morning time to practice in 5A. *State Test: Students will need to know where each State is located on the map of the United States. *For the Capitals Test, students will need to know the correct capital when given the name of a State. For example: What is the Capital of Washington State? Answer: Olympia. I will show them an example of the format of the test as time draws near.
ELA
Hello HRS families. Next week, will continue unit one: What Makes a Story Great? In this unit we are reading and analyzing literature, with the end goal or writing a short story. You will notice that students receive their Number the Stars novel. Students should complete the assigned reading I put on the matrix, and I ask that students don’t read ahead. Students should keep their books in paper sleeves or ziploc bags when traveling to and from school. Vocab books will also come home for assigned work, and should also come back to school. We are beginning the 2nd vocab unit on Monday, so please review the words with your child. In class, we are focusing on writing theme statements using motifs (single word ideas about life).
In 5th grade language arts, students need to write a complete sentence stating the theme of a story. We call these theme statements. They should sound like lessons, morals, and/or statements about life (not characters or plot). For example, “Facing challenges helps people grow as individuals.” Students will also learn how to write a RACE response, which introduces the idea of citing evidence and explaining evidence (Restate, Answer, Cite, and Explain). Have a great weekend!
