-Last week students discussed important Black scientists like George Washington Carver, Mae Jemison, Gladys West and the barriers faced for these individuals to be recognized as important members of the science communities. We will continue these discussions next week with short videos of scientists talking about their experiences.

Social Studies

Next week we will move on to Lesson 8. In Lesson 8 Slavery in the Americas students will dive deeper into the history of slavery in the Americas by analyzing primary sources, images, and literature from different parts of the journey enslaved Africans experienced by visiting 6 learning stations. Essential Question: What was the impact of slavery on African people? In this lesson students will be able to describe life in West Africa in the 1500s and how the trade of enslaved people began. Identify the components of triangular trade. Analyze how Africans survived the Middle Passage and responded to a life of slavery in the colonies.

Black History Month

We will be learning about 6 important people during Black History Month by reading the biographies of James Weldon Johnson, Maya Angelou, Marian Wright Edelman, Mary Mcleod Bethune, Carter G. Woodson and Alex Haley. Students will have a chance to learn about some of the positive impacts these people made in history.

ELA

Hello and happy weekend! We will be done with Part Two: Via on Wednesday after break. double-entries will be due on Thursday of next week. The grading scale for these is on the top of the document on Google Classroom. If students prefer to hand-write these, they may work on notebook paper or print out the double-entry (They may need to increase the spaces to fit their entries). I do ask that they use a ruler to make a neat T-chart so that it’s easy to read. We will do another character emotions chart for Via, just like the one we did for Part One. No spelling and vocab words next week. Have a great weekend!
