Dear Fifth Grade Parents!
Bingo Bash Tonight!
Thank you to all of the families who signed up for Bingo Bash. Confirmation emails were sent out to those who have registered. Doors open promptly at 6pm tonight!
*Reminders: Grades 5 – 8 are asking parents to sign your child out at the end of the Bingo at 8:00pm. Students will enter at 6pm and the teachers will take the attendance. (Parents do not need to sign their child in at the beginning for grades 5 – 8.)
*If you are carpooling, it is fine to sign out students under your care. We especially do not want students to leave the school hall without an adult. Please make sure your child understands this and that you have clearly communicated your carpool plans. Thank you for your help in this matter.
*Pick up: is at 8:00 pm. If you arrive a few minutes early while black-out bingo is wrapping up, you may sign your student out with the homeroom teacher and enjoy watching black-out with us. That will help speed things up. We’d like all students to be off campus by 8:15 pm if possible, so staff can clean up.
*Cell phones: If they absolutely need to come with your child, they should be off and away at all times.
*Behavior: Please remind your child of Safe, Respectful and Responsible behavior during Bingo and emphasize your expectations. We look forward to this event all year and want it to be fun for everyone!!!!

Next week we will begin Chapter 17, Liturgy of the Word. In this chapter we will reflect on God’s personal invitation through Scripture, recognize the Bible as the written Word of God which we must read, reflect on and use in our prayers. We will also be identifying the type of content in the Old Testament and the New Testament. We are looking at different materials and substances and making multisensory observations. Students will be making solutions, talking about mass, and observing what happens when we evaporate solutions.
Social Studies
In Lesson 8 Slavery in the Americas students will dive deeper into the history of slavery in the Americas by analyzing primary sources, images, and literature from different parts of the journey enslaved Africans experienced by visiting 6 learning stations. Essential Question: What was the impact of slavery on African people? In this lesson students will be able to describe life in West Africa in the 1500s and how the trade of enslaved people began. Identify the components of triangular trade. Analyze how Africans survived the Middle Passage and responded to a life of slavery in the colonies. Looking ahead, the test for this Lesson 8 will be on Monday, March 3rd.
ELA
Hello HRS families! Next week, we will continue our study of Wonder. There will be some reading in class and also at home. I will put page numbers on the matrix. This past week, I introduced students to Socratic Seminars, in which we have a student-led discussion about a topic in the book. Your kids did an outstanding job contributing in a respectful, thoughtful way. Ask your kids about it this weekend to hear how it went from their perspective. We will continue to do these seminars throughout the rest of Wonder. We will get a new set of spelling words next week, too. Please note: the double-entries represent several days of homework. Not completing these on time, or at all, will impact grades. Students should have journals ready to turn in by the time we finish a chunk of reading. I’m seeing some really outstanding literary analysis from 5th graders. Keep it up! I hope you have a great weekend!
