Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
I hope you are all doing well and enjoying this winter weather. I know the students are very excited about the snow! I really enjoyed meeting with all of you during conferences.
I hope you have a peaceful Advent season.

Schoolwide Advent Service Project
Every year we engage in an Advent service project to assist students with developing their understanding of Catholic Social Teachings and the obligation we have as Catholics to be of service to others.
This year we have two schoolwide projects going on and families are encouraged to participate as you feel comfortable and are able.
For the preschool – grades 6, we will be collecting diapers, pullups, wipes, and new or gently used coats and kids clothing for Westside Baby and other local organizations that support families in our Seattle Community.
The junior high will also be collecting adult coats and a few other items to support outreach ministries at St. James Cathedral.
Information will also come from your child’s teacher. Items can be dropped at the school in the front hallway between November 28th and December 14th. Items will be delivered on December 14th after they are blessed at our school Mass that day.

December 15th, Our Christmas Program begins with the Holy Rosary School band at 6:00 pm. All classes K-8 will have a chance to perform. We’re excited to see this tradition return. Religion
Sacrament of Reconciliation
During this Advent season students will have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. 5A class will go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Wednesday (12/7). Students will go to “one-on-one” confessions in the church. Today I reviewed this process and prepared the students for this Sacrament by having them self-reflect using an Examination of Conscience. Students who are not Catholic are welcome to speak with Father Oakland one-one-one as well but they will not receive the Sacrament.
We will have the Ch. 3 Test on Monday (12/5). Students should be studying for this test by rereading the chapter and studying the study guide. I will also be teaching about Advent next week and students will complete an Advent informational packet. We will also be reading and discussing the Gospel Readings about the Birth of Christ in Matthew, Chapters 1-3 and Luke, Chapters 1-3. Students will have an opportunity to reread these chapters in small groups while doing a “close reading”. In addition, towards the end of the week we will be learning about Epiphany. Students will be making a watercolor emotion poem about Epiphany. These watercolor poems will be displayed in the main school hallway in January.

Students are practicing using microscopes. Students will learn how to prepare a wet-mount slide. They will also learn to focus up and down over the surface of an object that has depth. Students will then use their skills to identify unknown specimens using a microscope.
Social Studies
We are currently learning about Chapter 6, Early English Settlements. Students have learned about Roanoke, Jamestown and Plymouth. Students have been divided into groups and have answered a list of questions for an “Act-it-Out”. These three assignments are in Google Classroom and class time has been given to answer these questions. Some students may need to work on them for homework if they did not complete them in class. We will be having these presentations on (12/12). Students are encouraged to bring in props and something to wear for a costume! (Please do not buy anything, just use something you already have at home.) The test for this Chapter will be on (12/13). A study guide will be pushed out on Google Classroom one week before the test.
ELA
Hello HRS families! Next week, students will finish sharing their final projects for Number the Stars. They will also get their graded short stories back. We will use class time to practice editing. I want students to use my comments to fix any errors in conventions: spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Following this, we will do a short unit on speaking and listening, using reader’s theater. Have a great weekend!
