This week we will begin Lesson 1, Longing for God. In this lesson we will reflect on the difference between material goods and things that money cannot buy. We will learn about the need we have to have a personal relationship with God. We will also learn about being stewards of God’s creation.

Social Studies

The fifth graders took the Lesson 1 test on Tuesday. We have begun Lesson 2, Native Americans and Their Land.  The test for this lesson will be on Tuesday 10/11. The goals for this lesson are:

Native Americans and Their Land

Lesson 2

Students will be able to:

  • Explain how one Native American group believes the world began. (Creation Story of the Hopi)
  • Trace Migration Routes of Native Americans into North America
  • Describe some natural environments that Native Americans encountered in North America
  • Identify some ways the Inuit adapted to the environment in the Arctic

Reading

This week we have been talking about ways readers learn about characters by studying Character Traits. We have also learned and practiced the steps in the Proofreading process. Next week 5th graders will be working with the Target Skill of finding Cause and Effect relationships in their reading. Please help your child learn how to log in to Powerschool to check his or her progress. If your child sees that any work is missing, please encourage them to finish and turn it in for credit. Thank you!

Science

Students will determine what evidence shows that continents have moved. They will learn about the theory of plate tectonics. They will also be able to describe what events are caused by plate movement.

5th Grade Language Arts

Great job to all the 5th graders for doing well on their grammar test! To prepare for descriptive essays, students have been closely examining adjectives and how adjectives, adverbs, verbs and nouns can “beef up” their writing. Currently, the students are in the first step of the 5 Step Writing Process, Ideas. At the end of this week and all next week students will begin organizing and drafting their ideas into rough drafts.

Have a great week!
