Religion

The students are very busy making their “My Baptism Collages” in class. They have written down some questions in their 5-subject notebooks in which they have been assigned to ask a parent for the answers. These questions are about their own baptism. We will be doing the final draft of the assignment in class. Students will have a rubric to follow. After Thanksgiving we will spend time practicing for our Advent prayer service. This will give us a perfect opportunity to learn about the meaning of the Advent season.

Social Studies

The fifth graders will be taking the Lesson 4 test on Tuesday 11/20. Students should study the Interactive Notebook notes for lesson 4 as well as practice the on-line test. The week after the holiday we will begin Lesson 5, Routes of Exploration to the New World. In this lesson we will learn about eight European explorers and their journey to the New World.

Language Arts

Students have started a grammar unit on: common and proper nouns, action verbs, multi-syllable adjectives and synonyms. Currently students are examining the difference between: common, proper, singular, plural, and compound nouns. Students are also learning the importance of capitalization for different proper nouns, i.e. people, locations, and special events. Please gently remind your child to study for upcoming spelling tests. The next spelling test is November 20th.

Science

Students begin a research-based science unit called Microworlds. In this unit, students will learn to use their powers of observation with the help of magnifying lenses and microscopes to see familiar things in a new way. They are also introduced to a fascinating new world-the cellular structure of living organisms.
