February 4, 2010

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

We are nearing the end of Catholic Schools Week. As you know, the big day is tomorrow when the Teacher’s play (win) the 8th Graders in Volleyball! Should be fun!

We will have our Valentine’s Day Party on Thursday February 11th from 1:00- 1:50! You will be receiving an email from the Buchanan’s about this in the near future.

Here is a brief curriculum update:

Math
Monday-Lesson 55, Multiplying by Three Digit Numbers
Tuesday-Test #10
Wednesday-Multiplying by Three-Digit Numbers that include Zero
No School Friday!!

Social Studies
On Monday the 5th Graders will be moving on to Chapter 9, Colonial Williamsburg. In the lesson the classroom becomes Williamsburg and the students will rotate to the different locations in town and learn about life in Colonial Williamsburg.

Reading
The 5th graders continue to read Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. We are having lots of very interesting discussions as we move through the book! This week we worked on identifying character traits, plot and setting.

The 2nd Trimester book report is due Feb. 19th. No homework passes will be accepted for this project.

Language Arts
This week, students focus on the writing trait of “voice” as we try to write with real emotion. One goal is to make the writing sound as if the person is talking directly to the reader. We also continue to learn about conflict resolution using our “Steps to Respect” Curriculum. We learn the steps to initially use when working out a problem with a friend: 1.) Respectfully ask what is wrong. 2.) Listen carefully and think about your friend’s point of view. 3.) Figure out what to do to make it better. 4.) Ask yourself, “Is it working?” If it’s not working, try something else.

There will be no spelling test or assignment this week.

Science
–Students did a wonderful job on their inventions-so many creative ideas!
Students will explore how adaptations help organisms survive in extremely cold or hot and dry climates. Students will investigate a how a polar bear stays warm by making and using a model of fat insulation.
