Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

I hope you are back in the swing of things after the 4-day weekend. The students seem to be doing very well here at school! Here is a brief curriculum update.

Tuesday: 2/26: Lesson 72, Area, Part 1
Wednesday: 2/27: Lesson 73, Adding and Subtraction Decimals

Religion
This week we will have the Chapter 16 test on Monday. Students should read over the chapter as well as study the study guide. Tomorrow we will do our first lesson in the 5th grade “Steps to Respect” curriculum. We will be aiming for bi-monthly lessons out of this curriculum until June.

Social Studies
The fifth graders will be taking the Chapter 8 test tomorrow. (2/22) Next we will move into Chapter 9, which is about the town of Williamsburg. During this chapter students will visit several different “centers” to learn about life in Williamsburg. The students tend to really love this Chapter!!

Language Arts
Students continue to review verbs. We will take a test on verbs (helping, action, linking, verb phrases, past, present & future tenses) on Monday, February 25th. Students will receive a study guide Friday in class. I have added some good links to my webpage for students to access for extra practice. There is not a spelling assignment or test this week.

Reading
Book Bag presentations begin today. In addition to enjoying these oral reports, we will continue reading The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Homework activities will continue to reinforce the vocabulary and comprehension of the book.

Science
Students begin Chapter 4 Ecology. Students will learn what makes up an ecosystem. They will discover about the parts of an ecosystem; and how habitats and niches are related. Students will observe a soil sample and separate it into living, once living and nonliving parts.

Have a great week!
