February 2, 2012

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

We have had a very busy week celebrating our school. Tomorrow is “Hawaiian” dress up day with the Spirit Assembly as well as the Teacher vs. 8th Graders Volleyball Game!

The following is a curriculum update for the week of 2/6-2/10.

Math

2/6 Lesson 59, Fractions Equal to 1

2/7 Lesson 60, Finding a Fraction to Complete a Whole

2/8 Test # 11

2/9 Investigation 6

Religion

We are working on Chapter 15, Forgiveness and Healing.  The students learned about the Bible story, The Prodigal Son.  We will also be creating “DVD” movie jacket that tells about a movie that has the theme of Forgiveness and Healing.

Social Studies

The fifth graders have been working on Chapter 7, Comparing the Colonies.  They are preparing “Billboard Advertisements” about one of the colonies.  Friday (2/3) each group will give their presentations and try to lure people to their colony.  The test for this lesson will be on 2/7.  This test will include a map test on the 13 Colonies. Students have been instructed to study them in their Interactive Notebook for this lesson.

Science

Students did a fantastic job on their inventions. I saw many creative ideas and products!

Students will learn how scientists classify plants. They will compare mosses, ferns, conifers and flowering plants. Students will take a test on Chapter 1, Comparing Living Things, next Thursday (2/9).

Language Arts

Students are continuing to learn about expository writing and what audiences’ expository writing is used for. This week students have been working on Expository paragraphs.  Next week students will start writing a magazine article on a topic of their choice. During the construction of the student’s magazine article, each phase of the writing process will be used; ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. This expository unit will continue into February.
