Science

Students have wrapped up our environmental engineering unit and had a great time working collaboratively on our oil spill clean ups. Next week we will start our unit on Microworlds! Students will use microscopes to explore the world we can’t see without magnification!

ELA

Hello HRS families! Congrats to our 5th graders for finishing our first class novel. Before we start our next book, I’d like all students to have a grade-level novel (chapter book, no comic books or graphic novels) to be reading in their free time, and that they can bring to school. As you’ve probably seen on the matrix, we’ve been taking a pause from vocab the last couple weeks so that we can spend more time focusing on the ending of Number the Stars. Please note the upcoming due dates for assignments related to Number the Stars, which were on the matrix this week. Students will get class time for these, but may need to work at home as well, especially the final project, which is due on November 18th. Project options are on Google Classroom. We’ve spent some time in class discussing how to be respectful and considerate in our tone when creating projects related to The Holocaust. I have considered removing the game option in the past, but a few years ago, a group of students created a game that was so moving that I decided to keep the option. If your child chose the game and you’d like to connect about it, feel free to send me an email.

Some other assignments to be aware of: The Final Reflection for Number the Stars is due Wednesday, November 12th. Remember, students are writing a theme statement after the first few questions. We also have a plot comic strip that students are making for the book. These are due on Friday the 14th.

This is an exciting time in ELA, in which students are gaining some independence in their studies as they work creatively to show their understanding of the novel. It’s important that they come to class prepared with required materials, but also with the right mindset: that time in class is productive and focused on the craft at hand as it relates to the novel.

Have a great, long weekend,

Mr. Williams
