Dear 5A Parents,

Happy November to all of you!

Thank you so much for providing a very fun Halloween Party for the class. The students loved it and they were very grateful!

November 25th-27th – Parent/Teacher/ Student Conferences:

We have already been preparing for the Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences here in 5A. In 5th Grade the students lead the conferences and they create a fun slideshow to use to present their Prayer, Goals, Self-Evaluation, and Student Work. They are having fun doing it as well! The sign-up for conferences will be going out next week on Wednesday, 11/6. Please do not forget to sign up. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Next week we will be finishing up Lesson 3, Signs of God’s Presence. Students have almost completed the study guide for this Chapter. We will review the study guide in class on Tuesday 11/5. Science

We will be starting a new and exciting unit in 5th grade science, we will be learning about Microworlds. Beginning our unit, we will be emphasizing the importance of observation in science. Students will look at objects under magnification and make detailed observations about everyday objects. Students will learn about lenses and how glass curvature creates magnifying abilities on a microscope and a magnifying glass.

Social Studies

Next week we will begin Lesson 4, Why Europeans Came to the New World? Students will examine objects/artifacts from an explorer’s ship. Then they will categorize artifacts as navigation tools, motives for exploration, or new products from the Americas. Students will work in pairs as research scientists and deep sea divers. They are encouraged to bring in swim goggles for class during this lesson!

ELA

Hello and happy weekend! Firstly, the spelling test for unit 4 was moved to Monday. Students won’t get spelling words next week so we can focus on Number the Stars, which we will complete next week. I will introduce the final project options for the novel (parents, you can see them on Google Classroom next week). For some options, they may work in a small group 2-3, but they need to plan on meeting outside of school. The project will be due one week after we finish the book (I will post the official due date on the matrix). Let me know if you have any questions about the projects. I will also collect students’ challenge words from Number the Stars on the day the book is finished. During class, we will continue to practice narrative writing, starting the week with using descriptive language, imagery, and figurative language. Students will also learn how to write effective dialogue using comic strips. These narrative writing skills we are learning will be demonstrated in a short story project coming up!

On another note, students who get below a C on vocab/spelling tests may arrange a time to retake it with me to get up to 70 percent. For bigger writing assessments, students can rewrite to demonstrate understanding of the writing skills we are learning. I ask that they do this within a reasonable time frame (Within a week or two). They need to arrange a time to show me the changes they made. As their writing coach, I’m encouraging students to always work on editing and revising before they turn in, and after they have received a grade to improve. I’d like them to approach writing with a growth mindset, and to know that we can always improve our writing skills. Have a great weekend!
