Science
When we return from break, students will be starting a new project, building a parachute. This unit will focus on engineering and design, which will tie well with their at home project for January: The Invention Convention. I talked to students briefly about starting to come up with potential ideas over break for their invention, which will solve a real world problem. I recommend families save 3-4 cardboard boxes from the holidays to use as materials for this project! I will send home detailed instructions for this project when we return!
Social Studies
After Christmas break students will be presenting their group presentations on the European Explorer they were assigned on Friday January 10th. We will also begin Lesson 6, Early English Settlements. In this lesson we will be learning about the Settlements of Roanoke Jamestown and Plymouth in a creative way by examining three pieces of European art depicting early life in these settlements. Essential Question: What challenges did the first English colonies face?
Social Studies:
- Compare and contrast the three English settlements of Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth.
- Locate Native American and English settlements on a map of colonial southern New England.
- Develop and use specific criteria as individuals and in groups to assess works of art.
Language Arts
- Determine main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details. (reading)
- Review the key ideas expressed and draw conclusions using information and knowledge gained from the discussions. (listening and speaking)
ELA
I hope you all have a wonderful Winter break! When we return from break, we will begin unit two: exploring our differences with the novel Wonder. In this unit, students will engage in collaborative discussions and activities related to how we should treat others who are different. Students will receive their book, and we will complete an anticipation guide to introduce students to some of the motifs encountered in the novel. We will also continue daily grammar and conventions practice to improve students’ writing skills. We’re paying close attention to comma usage by learning and applying conjunctions. Ask your kids about FANBOYS, SWABIs and THAMOs (Different conjunctions that require commas). Students can expect to start unit seven in our vocab and spelling book. See you after break!
