Science
When we return from break, students will be starting a new project, building a parachute. This unit will focus on engineering and design, which will tie well with their at home project for January: The Invention Convention. I talked to students briefly about starting to come up with potential ideas over break for their invention, which will solve a real world problem. I recommend families save 3-4 cardboard boxes from the holidays to use as materials for this project! I will send home detailed instructions for this project when we return!
Social Studies
When we return after the Christmas break students will finish up Lesson 6, Three English Settlements. We will have Act-it-Outs on Tuesday January 6th for 5A and Wednesday January 7th for 5B. Students should plan to bring in a simple prop or costume from home on that day. We discussed ideas in class as well. (Just something you already have at home that would work .) The test for this chapter is on Friday January 9th. The study guide has been on Google Classroom for a while and students should be using it to study.
ELA
I hope that you all have a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s Eve. After break, we officially began our Wonder Unit with some pre-reading activities. Students will receive a book and a bag/pouch to carry it in. I’d like them to transport their books in said bags to protect our books from damage. Students can expect to have reading and double-entry journals for homework throughout this unit (Example will be put on Google Classroom when we return). I will also cover skills such as citing evidence and writing effective commentary using the RACE strategy.
