Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

We have had a very successful week here in 5A! The following is a brief curriculum update.

Religion: This week the students took the Chapter 1 test. Now we are moving on to Chapter 2, Worshipping God. The Objective of this lesson is to recognize how human work can give glory to God. Monday will be examining our lives and our natural environment to express thankfulness for creation. Wednesday we will be learning about Chico Mendes and the Rain Forest to recognize how human work can give glory to God. On Friday we will identify the connection between stewardship and God’s providence.

Math: Students must put the correct heading as we learned in class on each math HW assignment. A deduction of 1 point will occur for incorrect headings.

Monday: Lesson 20, Three Ways to Show Division

Tuesday: Lesson 21, Problems About Equal Groups

Wednesday: Test #3

Thursday: Investigation 2, Fractions

Language Arts: This week students have been busy learning about verbs. The students will have an exam at the end of the unit to conclude their recent studies. The exam date is set for October 4th. A study guide will go home with the students on October 1st. Meanwhile, students can use their notes in their 5 sub notebook to study for the test. In the following weeks, students will start their descriptive writing unit and complete their first written graded assignment. Please keep in mind, if your student was absent for Tuesday’s spelling test, they are responsible for making-up their spelling test after school on the following Tuesday.

Reading: We continue to read Hatchet this week, with a focus on the story elements of setting, character and conflict. 5th graders implemented two study strategies for test preparation this week: creating and using flash cards to learn new story vocabulary, and re-reading text to deepen comprehension and enhance memory of the details of the story.

Science: Students will determine what evidence shows that continents have moved. They will learn about the theory of plate tectonics. They will also be able to describe what events are caused by plate movement.

Social Studies

The Lesson 1 test, Geography of the United States is on Friday 9/28. We have begun lesson 2, Native Americans and Their Land. Students will be learning:

  • How one Native American group believes the world began. (Creation Story of the Hopi)
  •  Migration Routes of Native Americans into North America
  • The natural environments that Native Americans encountered in North America
  • Identify some ways the Inuit adapted to the environment in the Arctic

Have a great week!

Go Huskies!
