Dear Fifth Grade Parent,

Next week we will be very busy working hard in 5A! Here is a curriculum update for the upcoming week.

Religion
We will be moving into Chapter 19, Answering God’s Call, which is about the Sacraments of Service, Holy Orders and Matrimony. We have also continued on in our “Steps to Respect”- A Bullying Prevention Curriculum. This week we started Lesson 4, Recognizing Conflict, Recognizing Bullying. March 26th the students will be taking the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Students will have individual confessions. We will be reviewing and preparing for this next week during Religion class.

Math
Monday: Lesson 69, Fractions of a Second, Comparing and Ordering Decimal Numbers
Tuesday: Lesson 70, Writing Equivalent Decimal Numbers, Writing Cents Correctly
Wednesday: Test # 13
Friday: Investigation7, Pattern Recognition

Social Studies
The fifth grade took the Chapter 10 test today. Next week we will begin chapter 11, To Declare Independence or Not. In this lesson, students will learn about six prominent Loyalists and Patriots and record whether or not the American colonists should declare independence. Then there will be a panel debate between the Patriots and Loyalists. Students will complete the interactive notebooks in class and prepare for the panel debate!!

Reading
Our reading focus this week has been on analyzing Text Structure in non-fiction text. Students learned how to use headings, sub-headings, captions and graphic sources to improve comprehension of informational text. We continue to emphasize the importance of creating time for independent silent reading.

Language Arts
Students learn to develop character sketches. We review elements of plot in narrative writing. Our spelling test is on Monday; the assignment is due on Monday, as well.

Science
Students will learn about natural cycles in an ecosystem. They will discover how carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen and water cycle through an ecosystem. Students will take a test on Chapter 4, Ecology, on Tuesday, March 30th.
