Hello Math Families –

This week we will begin the Ch. 1 in the 6th grade curriculum, Ratios and Proportional Relationships.  We will start the week with factors, multiples, lowest common denominators and greatest common multiples to get us ready to begin studying ratios towards the end of the week.  There are many real world applications so I anticipate this being a fun chapter.

Thank you – Mrs. Herrin

Science

Students will look at microbes (volvox, blepharisma, and vinegar eels) under the microscope. They will learn the characteristics of each.

Students will take a quiz on these organisms based on the notes they have taken in class on Friday, January 18th.

Social Studies 5

After the break we will begin Chapter 7, Comparing the Colonies. In a Problem Solving Groupwork activity, students create a billboard for one of six British colonies and then try to persuade other students to settle in their colony.

Essential Question: How were the three colonial regions alike and different

Lib/Tech

Students should complete 60 minutes of typing practice for the week.  Each grading week for 5A starts on Thursday and ends the following Wednesday.  Their next hour is due by the end of Wednesday (12/26).

For Christmas break, students can earn up to 30 points extra credit for completing at least a half hour of typing time between their next due date (12/26) and their return class in the new year (1/10).

Students will have a chance to retake their most recent test on keys U, R, K, and Previous Keys on (1/10).  Students will be graded on their accuracy and speed using the home row keys while their hands are covered. Speed will be expected to be at least 30 wpm for these keys.
