Language Arts
Students complete special Christmas-themed creative writing projects. As we go through the writing process, students learn to revise for sentence fluency, word choice, voice and conventions. There will not be a spelling assignment or test this week.

Science
Students will explore magnification by experimenting with different shapes to learn which ones magnify. Students will learn the functions of the parts of a microscope and how to adjust light and focus a microscope.

Social Studies
The fifth graders have begun Chapter 6, The Early English Settlements. They are learning about three English Settlements, Roanoke, Jamestown and Plymouth. In small groups they will be working to prepare for “Act It Outs” for each of these settlements. They will also be completing the Interactive notebook for this lesson. The test for this Chapter will be next Thursday. (12/18 for 5A and 12/17 for 5B)

Reading
In Reading, 5th Graders have been working with the Target Skill, ‘Steps in a Process.’ They have enjoyed getting back into the Scott Foresman Reading text with the true adventure story, Diver and the Dolphins. There will be a short Selections Test on Friday, which will cover vocabulary and comprehension questions from the story.
Looking ahead to next week: We will have a ‘Christmas Picture Book’ day next Thursday. Students have been asked to bring in a few favorites to share that day. Please, no family treasures, and no need to purchase a new book for this activity.

Have a great week!
