Boomerang Newsletter – October 20, 2023

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Students will be coming home with their Mid-Trimester Reports and Fall Maps Testing Scores. We ask that students return the envelope (empty) next week. Please note that on the Mid-Trimester Report you will see a section which shows students grades from Alma. There will also be a section for “Behavior and Work Skills”. This section will not be on the Report Card for Trimester 1. It is however an area that students are working on constantly. Students also do a self-reflection of how they feel they are doing in these areas. The marks on the Mid-Trimester Report are a reflection of how the teachers feel they are doing in those areas.

Technology Access at Home

As part of the instructional program our 5th – 8th grade students need access to a device (iPad, tablet, chromebook, computer) at home to use programs such as ALEKS and Google Classroom.  If your child does not have access to a device at home, we can help!  Please reach out to me as the homeroom teacher if you need a device to borrow to use at home.  Thank you!

5A Prayer Service

Looking ahead 5A will lead the school in the Friday Prayer Service on November 3rd. This will be held in the school hall. The prayer service will begin around 8:40 am but I encourage you to arrive around 8:30 am and get seated. Usually the prayer services are between 10 – 15 minutes long. We hope you join us in prayer on November 3rd!!

Religion

We are working on Chapter 2, Made to be with God. In this chapter we are exploring the sense of longing we all feel as a part of the desire God put in our hearts to be truly happy with Him. We will examine the search for happiness through the Gospel account of the Woman at the Well. We will also be taking a deeper look at grace as a free, loving gift of participation in the life of the Holy Trinity. Students will begin the study guide for this chapter on Monday 10/30. (Please note that I changed this date to allow a bit more time for this chapter.)  This month students are learning their first 5th Grade Prayer, The Jesus Prayer. Next week we will also be practicing for our November 3rd Prayer Service.

Science

Students will learn how the body fights disease.  They will complete a poster that diagrams the body’s immune system. They will use these posters and notes they have taken in class to prepare for a quiz next Friday (10/27).

Social Studies

This week we worked on Chapter 2, Native Americans and Their Land. Students completed their reading notes and wrote their part for the Act-it-Out of an Inuit family. They also had time in class to practice their Act it Out. The Act-it Out will be on Monday (10/23). Students may bring in winter gear such as hats, gloves, scarves and coats to wear during Social Studies class for a costume. We will be reviewing for the test during class as well next week. The test for this Chapter will be on 10/27. The study guide will be on Google Classroom on 10/20.

ELA

Hello HRS families. Next week, we will wrap up our study of plot and conflict. Students will apply what they learned from the film to Number the Stars, and the short story “The Fun They Had.” We will also finish up unit 3 in our vocab books, and have the test on Friday. We are also getting to the end of Number the Stars. I will introduce the final project for the book next week.

On another note, students who get below a C on vocab/spelling tests may arrange a time to retake it with me to get up to 70 percent. For bigger writing assessments, students can rewrite to demonstrate understanding of the writing skills we are learning. I ask that they do this within a reasonable time frame (Within a week or two). They need to arrange a time to show me the changes they’ve made. As their writing coach, I’m encouraging students to always work on editing and revising before they turn in, and after they have received a grade. I’d like them to approach writing with a growth mindset, and to know that we can always improve what we write. Theme statements and summaries have been returned, and I’d like students to identify what they did well, and what they could improve on with editing and revision. Have a great weekend!
