Boomerang Newsletter: January 12, 2024

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and “Day On” with acts of service at home or in your community for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Today 5A students learned about him and they created beautiful Word Art.

Social Studies

Next week we will continue our study of Lesson 6 Early English Settlements. Students will be completing all the “Reading Notes” in the textbook as well as on Google Classroom for this chapter. Students have been divided into small groups and assigned a piece of historical Art related to Roanoke. Jamestown and Plymouth. Students will be presenting why they think their piece of Artwork should be displayed in the most prominent location. The test for this Lesson is Friday, January 19th.  The study guide will be on Google Classroom one week prior to the test.

Science

Students are making fact posters of the microbes they observed under the microscope (volvox, blepharisma, and vinegar eels).

Students will take a quiz on these organisms based on the notes they have taken in class next Friday, January 19th.

ELA

Hello HRS families. Next week, we will continue to read Wonder. Please follow the matrix to find which chapters to read at home. Students will find quotes while they read and add them to their double-entry journal. For part one (pages 1-80), they will need to find five quotes. For each quote, students write two sentences of commentary, in which they analyze the quote with inferences, predictions, and wonderings. I have examples on Google Classroom. These journals can be handwritten, or typed on Google Classroom. Additionally, if students want to increase their score on the short story assessment, they need to correct it by Friday, January 19th. I’ve asked that students arrange a time to show me corrections before or after school. This is a great opportunity for students to improve upon their writing skills as they identify common mistakes in their writing. Their book reviews for independent reading books are due on Wednesday of next week as well. Students can expect a new set of spelling words on Tuesday. Have a great weekend!
