Lesson 3: Being Assertive. Why This Lesson Matters
It is important for students to learn the differences between assertive, aggressive, and passive ways of communicating. Much of the violence that plagues schools begins with aggressive interactions. Aggressive communication causes problems with other students, school staff, and adults in the community. Students can reduce their involvement in aggressive and violent behaviors by using assertive communication skills to stand up for themselves and get a point across without disrespecting others.
Learning to be assertive also has value for students being bullied or otherwise mistreated by peers. These students can use assertiveness as a tool to stand up for their rights. Finally, students need assertiveness skills to get help in school and to communicate respectfully with adults across a variety of situations.
Religion
We will be continuing to work through Chapter 1, God’s Plan for All Creation. Students will begin to complete the Chapter 1 study guide on Google Classroom. This study guide will be used to prepare them for the test on 10/10.
Science
Students are beginning a unit titled “Infection Detection.” In this module students are presented with a problem where a large number of students at a school are sick. Students will learn about transmission of disease through a simulation and compare communicable and non-communicable diseases. Students will design, run, and analyze data from an experiment related to preventing the spread of germs. Students will investigate how the body protects us from these germs to keep us healthy.
Social Studies
We are continuing to work on Chapter 1, The Geography of the United States. Students have completed Geo Challenges A & B. Next we will be spending time correcting student work in class. Students will then be able to use their corrected answers as one tool to study for the Chapter test on 10/6. A study guide will also be pushed out on Google Classroom one week prior to the test. Please see the Matrix to see daily homework assignments.
ELA
Hello HRS families. Next we will continue unit one: What Makes a Story Great? In this unit, we are reading and analyzing literature with the end goal or writing a short story. You will notice that students received their Number the Stars novel. Students should complete the assigned reading that I put on the matrix, and I ask that students don’t read ahead. Students should keep their books in the provided sleeves/ziploc bags when traveling to and from school. Vocab books will also come home for assigned work, and should also come back to school throughout the week. We will have our first spelling and vocab test on Friday. In class, we are focusing on writing theme statements using motifs (single word ideas about life). In 5th grade language arts, students need to be able to write a complete sentence stating the theme of a story. Students will also learn how to write a RACE response, which introduces the idea of citing evidence and explaining evidence (Restate, Answer, Cite, and Explain). Have a great weekend!
