Next Friday we will be doing Lesson 2, Listening with Attention. Empathy and communication skills have been shown to increase school success and decrease youth involvement in problem behaviors, such as substance abuse and aggression. This lesson focuses specifically on listening with attention, a skill necessary for effective communication with others and for academic success. The main concept the 5th graders will be learning is “Listening with attention helps you learn, work with others, and make friends.

ELA
Hello HRS families. Students have been doing a great job getting into the routine of language arts. I wanted to remind families that students should expect language arts homework throughout the week, which will include work in their vocab book and/or reading from our class novels. This week, students will finish their found poems, which are created using magazine clippings. Full credit requires at least five lines (complete thoughts) glued onto construction paper. These will be due on Wednesday. We will also start unit one with writing theme statements using the short stories “The Giving Tree” and “The Fun they Had.” I will also hand out copies of our first class novel, Number the Stars. I will post assigned reading on the matrix and request that students do not read ahead. Thanks, and have a great weekend!
