Dear 5A Parents,
It was a pleasure meeting you all last night at Back to School Night! This week the 5A students have worked very hard to learn new procedures as well as the PBIS expectations. Next week we will move into the curriculum and begin our first units in each class. Have a wonderful long weekend! Ms. Semandiris

Science – Ms. McGuigan
Next week we will be working on our first hands-on experiment. Students will make swingers (pendulums) and observe and make predictions on the behavior of pendulums. Students will gain conceptual understanding of variables by manipulating aspects of the pendulums and predicting the behavior. Students will be recording their observations with graphs.
Social Studies – Ms. Semandiris
We will begin Chapter 1, The Geography of the United States next week. In this lesson students learn the basic skills needed to understand the geography of the United States by creating a series of annotated maps. Students will learn several geography skills including determining location of lines of latitude and longitude and identifying physical features of the United States. Students will be having direct instruction as well as small group work to complete a set of map questions. The answers to these questions are located in their text. Students will also be learning how to do a vocabulary assignment on a google doc.
ELA – Mrs. Davis
We had a wonderful start, meeting and greeting the 5th graders, most of whom I already know well, and getting started on some writing projects. In the coming week we will continue with DLR – a Daily Language Review warm-up activity, and get started with Spelling and Reading. The spelling routine will be Monday (this week Tuesday) introduce the unit and go over the assignments; there will be a few pages of homework in their Spelling workbook, due Thursday. The test will be on Friday. In Reading we will be focussing on the elements of Plot; reading and analyzing stories in the Journeys Anthology, in preparation for our first novel which we’ll start in the coming weeks.
Religion
Next week we will focus on our school’s theme for the year “God’s love is strong for us”. We will also start in our religion textbook.
