Social Studies

We are currently working on Chapter 8, Facing Slavery. In this Chapter we will be learning about the slave trade from the West African perspective. Students will be working through three dilemmas that the West African people faced during this time to decide what we would have done in their situation. Then we will learn what really happened in history. Students will be completing the Interactive Notebook Reading Notes in class. The test for this Chapter is on 2/10.

Reading

We finished reading Number the Stars this week. What a great book! We’ll be spending the next several reading classes discussing the book and doing some activities in response to the story. We brainstormed ways to prepare for the end of book test on Feb. 2. Strategies include: rereading, listening and participating in class discussions and exploring these websites: http://www.shmoop.com/number-the-stars/summary.html and http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/numberthestars/

Language Arts

This week in Language Arts the focus for spelling was vowel-vowel patterns. Students learned about different uses for commas and semicolons in grammar. Students finished their opinion essay for Number the Stars this week. They will write several short reflection pieces on the book in the next few classes.

Science

Inventions are due tomorrow. They will be displayed in the hallway for Catholic Schools Week.

Students will discover what makes producers important in an ecosystem. They will also learn how consumers get their energy.
