We will be moving on to Chapter 8, Facing Slavery. In this Chapter we will be learning about the slave trade from the West African perspective. Students will be working through three dilemmas that the West African people faced during this time to decide what we would have done in their situation. Then we will learn what really happened in history.

Science

Student’s inventions are due Friday, January 27th.

Students begin a unit on ecology. They will learn about the tropical rainforest ecosystem. Students will be able to describe the niche of several creatures that live in the rainforest including squirrel monkeys, kinkajous and ocelots. Students will discuss how different populations of organisms make up the rainforest community.

Language Arts

This week in Language Arts the focus for spelling was once again vowel-consonant patterns. Students reviewed regular and irregular verbs in grammar. In writing, students began wrapping up their opinion essay on Number the Stars. We have been working on self-editing strategies and ideas in class each day.

Reading

“This is my favorite book – EVER!” “Can we please read the next chapter for homework tonight?” “I LOVE this book even more than Hatchet!” These are some of the comments I’m hearing from 5th graders as we make our way through Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry. We are focusing this week on the theme of bravery as we discuss the suspenseful events of the story. I’m sure they would welcome the chance to share their thoughts with you!
