Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
The MAGAZINE DRIVE ends Wednesday, October 11th and we are only half way to our goal. Won’t you help us reach 100% family participation? If each family sells at least 1 magazine or secures one $25 donation, then each child in that family receives 1 FREE DRESS PASS. It is nice on prize distribution day when each child receives something. Plus the highest selling grade wins a Shug’s Ice Cream cart party just for them. Would love for Fifth Grade to win that special treat!
Library/Technology Class: We will begin our Typing Class next week in Lib/Tech. We’ll be using the Typing Club. Students will have their accounts set up in Google Classroom. Students will then be able to practice at home or school.
Make-up Work Policy If students are absent due to illness, they can turn in school work with no late penalty when they have recovered. For assessments and long term projects, students may be given an extension as needed. Please note: it is the students responsibility to find missed work and initiate contact with teachers. We recommend following the Matrix.

Please note that the center column labeled “Daily Agenda” contains a description of weekly classwork. On the right, in red, students can find homework and upcoming due dates.

The following is a curriculum update for the week of October 9 – 13, 2024:
Religion
On Tuesday (10/10) we will have our Chapter 1 test. Students have completed the study guide and we went over it in class. They had the opportunity to add to their answers or write in the correct answers. On Monday we will have a review and finish up our “Reminder Chart for Stewards” handout in class. Wednesday and Thursday, we will begin Chapter 2, Made to be with God. In this chapter we will explore the sense of longing we all feel as a part of the desire God put in our hearts to be truly happy with Him. We will be asking the question, Why are longings important? Then we will be learning about the story of Martha and Mary. (Luke 10:38 – 42).

Science
Students will work in small groups to create a model to represent the connections between different components of a river ecosystem. They will use that model to experiment with different materials and methods used to clean oil spills. Students will evaluate the success of cleaning up the oil spill and discuss ways to improve their methods.
Social Studies
Next week we will be moving on to Lesson 2, Native American and their land
Native Americans and Their Land. In this lesson we will explore different environments and learn how the Inuits adapted their daily lives. Students will be focusing on the following objectives:

- Trace the migration routes of Native Americans into North America.
- Summarize key features of four environments.
- Identify ways in which the Inuits adapted to their Arctic environment.
Language Arts
- Interpret images through an act-it-out. (speaking and listening)
ELA
Hello, and happy weekend! This past week, students completed their first writing assessment on writing a theme statement (using motifs, cause, and effect) and writing a “Williams’ Style” summary. Directions for how to complete these are here. Next week, we will continue to practice citing evidence and writing commentary when responding to questions about literature using the RACE strategy (restate, answer, cite, explain). This is something we revisit frequently throughout the year. From there, we will move into studying plot using a film. Please sign the permission slip sent home, and let me know if you have concerns about it. Students can also expect a spelling/vocab test on Friday, and to continue reading Number the Stars.
