Religion

We are working on Chapter 2 Made to be with God. We will be working to complete the study guide for this chapter this week. The Ch. 2 Test will be on October 20. The students need to finish their Maps testing so I will need to use some of my Religion classes this week to make sure everyone has completed all the tests.

Second Step

Every Monday Ms. Sampson, our school counselor, is teaching a second step lesson in 5A! She is teaching students about K.C.’s Wheel.

Kelso’s Choice Curriculum: K.C. ‘s wheel is a simplified version of Kelso’s choices that is aimed at helping preteens with problems that they are facing. Minor problems cause minor feelings of annoyance, embarrassment, boredom, etc. There are also “serious problems” that need to be taken to an adult because they are dangerous and could involve someone’s safety. There are verbal choices and non-verbal choices.

Science

Students begin a unit in the Engineering is Elementary program. Students will explore the field of environmental engineering as they design a process to clean an oil spill in a model river. They will learn how pollution can negatively impact the organisms in the ecosystem and how engineers must consider both short and long-term effects of pollutants on the organisms in a given ecosystem.

Social Studies

Next week we will continue to work on Chapter 2, Native Americans and Their Land. Most students completed the Ch. 2 “Reading Notes” in class. They will be due on 10/12. Next week students will be preparing answers to a list of interview questions for an Act-it-out of an Inuit family in the Arctic.  They will be answering questions about how they adapted to their environment to survive the harsh elements. The ch. 2 test will be on October 21th. A study guide will be given out one week before the test.

E.L.A.

Hello parents, and happy weekend. This past week, students took a deep dive into plot. We watched clips from the lion king and completed a plot diagram. Students were also expected to identify conflict and themes. In my class, we start by identifying motifs, or single-word ideas about life. Students then consider the cause and effect these motifs have on characters, and then craft a theme statement. You may have seen this on their homework from the past week. The goal of this is to increase students’ comprehension of literature, and also apply it in their own writing. Next week, students will begin to draft their own short stories. We will take a look at setting, and use pictures to influence description and sensory details. Following this, students will learn how to write exposition, using “All Summer in a Day ” as a model. Following this, students will use a planner to organize a sequence of events for their stories. We will also be reading a few examples of other student’s narrative writing (in Journey’s), so they know what is expected in their own writing. Have a great weekend, and email me if you have any questions.
