October 14, 2010

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

I hope this Boomerang letter finds you and your family well. I look forward to meeting with all of you next week at conferences! Here is a brief curriculum update.

Math
10/18: Test #4
10/19: Lesson 26

Religion
The week after conferences we will begin Chapter 14, Reborn In Christ. November 7th Prayer Service will be done by 5A.

Social Studies
Our Lesson 3 test will be on Tuesday October 19th. The Ch. 3 Interactive Notebooks will be checked on the day of the test. The week after conferences we will be moving into Lesson 4, Why Europeans left for the New World.

Reading
1st Trimester Book Report: This book should be a Newbery Award winning book or a Children’s Classic. Reading lists for these categories can be found on Mrs. Harris’ website, (Destiny link), the ALA website, or by doing a Google search for Newbery Award Winners or Children’s Classics. Each student received a copy of the directions and grading rubric. (This can also be accessed from my website.) The final due date for the project is Nov. 18th, with a couple of mini-due dates in between to help students stay on track. Parents, please review your child’s choice of books for appropriate content and reading level. Thank you!

Science
Students will learn how the sun compares with other stars. Students will also discover how scientists measure distance in space.

Language Arts: Students continue to draft their persuasive pumpkin patch papers–some alliteration, for those of you paying attention 😉 We focus on organizing a 5 paragraph essay, which includes good word choice, original ideas and lots of descriptive adjectives. Our spelling assignment is due on Monday; the test will also be on Monday.

Have a great week!

Ms. Semandiris
