Mrs. Heuer
We will start up next week on Tuesday with a chapter 9 test on area. We ended up spending an extra day to cement those area formulas to memory and to give the students plenty of practice applying the formulas to different types of problems. After our Ch. 9 test, we will begin our final unit, which deals with 3D geometry. We will be finding the volume and surface area of prisms and pyramids. This unit will conclude our year.
Social Studies
We are currently working on Chapter 13, The Revolutionary War. Next Week, students will be working with a partner to complete the interactive Notebook for this lesson. Looking ahead, this test will be on June 8th.
* States/Capitals Test is on June 7th
LA
This week 5th graders have been practicing how to spell some words that they may be unfamiliar with. This group has been focused on words that begin with com-, con-, pre-, and pro-. Students have also reviewed singular and plural possessive nouns and have been practicing how to write phrases in shorter ways using possessive nouns. Students have also been journaling at the beginning of every class lately in response to a prompt that I have on the board when they walk in and they seem to be enjoying writing about new topics. I love hearing what they come up with as well!
Reading
The 5th graders have enjoyed reading informational text about Cougars. They have had the opportunity to collect interesting facts, identify main ideas and supporting details, as well as identify cause and effect relationships. Next week we’ll be reading an historical fiction selection about the Revolutionary Voyage of John Quincy Adams. We’ll continue to examine how events are related and how one event causes another. Don’t forget to load up on summer reading books at the BOGO book fair next week!
Science
Students continue to experiment with vehicles. They will predict and investigate how variations in rubber band energy affect the distance their vehicle travels. They will discuss the relationship between the number of turns of the rubber band around the axle and the distance their axel-driven vehicles travel.
Family Life
In Lesson 2 of the Family Life text, students will explore how moods within the family affect each family member. Students will learn how to respect themselves and others whatever their moods.
In Lesson 3, students will critically examine messages communicated by the media. Students will learn the importance of honest communication and practice good listening skills.
