May 12, 2011

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

We had a couple of very nice “sunny” days this week! I hope you are all doing well. The following is a curriculum update for the week of May 16-20.

Religion
Monday, 5/16 students will take the Chapter 19 Test. Thursday and Friday of next week we will move to Chapter 9, New Life. In this Chapter our “Faith Focus” is that through the sacraments, Christ unites his followers to his Passion, death, Resurrection and Ascension and that Jesus Christ is the Redeemer of the human race.

Tomorrow, 5/13, I will be teaching a lesson from the Steps to Respect curriculum on conflict. Mrs. McFaul will also be doing two lessons next week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from the Steps to Respect curriculum.

Math
Monday: Lesson 90, Reducing Fractions, Part 2.
Tuesday: Test #17
Wednesday: Investigation 9, Line Graphs
Thursday: Lesson 91, Simplifying Improper Fractions

Social Studies
The fifth graders will take the Social Studies test Ch. 14, The Constitution tomorrow 5/13. Next week we will begin Ch. 15, The Bill of Rights. Students will learn about the Bill of Rights and several of its key amendments.

Science
Students are beginning a new unit on the human body. In Chapter 3 of the Family Life text, students will look at messages they receive from communication media. They will learn the importance of honesty and respect in good communication and prayer as a communication with God.

Reading
The third trimester book report is due on Thurs. May 19th. No late passes will be accepted.

Language Arts
Students will focus on the traits of “ideas and content” and “organization” as we begin a narrative writing project. We will review how to compose a character sketch and the elements of plot. Students will begin brainstorming ideas for a short story that they will create using a special software program. Students have a spelling assignment due on Monday; our test is also on Monday.

Have a great week!
Ms. Semandiris
