(Time will also be given in class to complete the Interactive Notebook.) The Colonial Billboard Presentations are on 2/11 and the Chapter test is on 2/20.
Reading
5th graders have begun reading Number the Stars. We’re only through the first couple of chapters, but have already had many interesting discussions about the effects of the Nazi occupation on the people of Denmark. Please feel free to extend those conversations at home to help deepen your child’s understanding of the circumstances in Europe during the time period of this novel. (1943)
Language Arts
Students worked hard on their Martin Luther King Jr. Expository poems. The illustrations and poems turned out to be wonderful works of art and will be displayed in the hall the week of February 2nd-21st.
Our next unit of study will be on quotations, capitalization and punctuation. The 5th grade students will have a spelling test next week on February 11th. Please note there will not be a spelling test on February 18th.
Science
Students will learn how vertebrates and invertebrates are classified. Students will compare and contrast types of invertebrates (mollusks, arthropods, insects), with types of vertebrates (mammals, fish, birds etc.).
