Religion

When we return to school next week it will be Ash Wednesday. We will begin our Lenten journey. Students have already made their Lenten goals in the areas of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. They wrote their Lenten Goals on a heart and then decorated it. We will tie these hearts with ribbon and place them on our prayer table in the classroom. Next week we will also begin Chapter 16, Gathered as One. In this chapter students will learn that in the liturgy,

  • The Holy Spirit forms the community as an assembly to one another.
  • The Eucharist unites Christ’s followers to him and to one another.
  • In the Eucharist, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. He is really and truly present in the Eucharist – Body, Blood, soul, and divinity.
  • In worship and daily living, the community shows that through the Eucharist, Christ lives in us, and we live in Christ.

Students will be receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Friday, 2/24.

Science

Students are learning how energy moves through an ecosystem. Students will discover what food chains, food webs and energy pyramids show about energy flow in an ecosystem. To help students understand these concepts, they will create a food web and energy pyramid for an Antarctic ecosystem.

Social Studies

Next week we will continue to learn about Chapter 8 Facing Slavery.

Essential Question: What was the impact of slavery on African people?

We will be diving deeper into the history of slavery in the Americas by analyzing primary sources, images, and literature from different parts of the journey enslaved Africans experienced. Students are working in small groups to learn about three dilemmas the West African people faced. Students will be working on reading notes which are on Google Classroom. We will be taking a closer look at the triangular trade.

Objectives

Social Studies

  • Describe life in West Africa in the 1500s and how the trade of enslaved people began.
  • Identify the components of triangular trade.
  • Analyze how Africans survived the Middle Passage and responded to a life of slavery in the colonies.

ELA

Hello, and happy mid-winter break. When we return, we will continue reading Wonder. The long awaited spelling test will be on Thursday, and we will use the same words students wrote down before I was out sick (glad to finally be back!). We will also be making bookmarks using our favorite passages from the novel so far. Have a great break!
