Religion
We will begin Chapter 2, Made to be with God. In this chapter we will explore the sense of longing we all feel as a part of the desire God put in our hearts to be truly happy with Him. We will examine the search for happiness through the Gospel account of the Woman at the Well. We will also be taking a deeper look at grace as a free, loving gift of participation in the life of the Holy Trinity. Students will begin the study guide for this chapter on 10/17. The test for this chapter will be on 10/24. This month students are learning their first 5th Grade Prayer, The Jesus Prayer.

Students will design, run, and analyze data from an experiment related to preventing the spread of germs. Students will investigate how the body protects us from these germs to keep us healthy.

Next week we will continue to work on Chapter 2, Native Americans and Their Land. Students will be completing reading notes and participating in an Act-it-Out of an Inuit family. Students will work in small groups to prepare answers to a set of questions about life in the Arctic. The test for this for this Chapter will be on 10/27. The study guide will be on Google Classroom one week prior to the test.
ELA
Hello HRS families! Firstly, students should have turned in their RACE written response for The Giving Tree on Google Classroom. We worked on this in class throughout the week. If you’d like to read your child’s response, look for one, clear topic sentence that restates the question and answers the question. Then there should be a citation with a transition and quotation from the text (In the text, it says, “______________________.” Following this is two sentences of commentary in which the student explains their answer to the question and quote. We call this “commentary.” Altogether, the response should be one clear paragraph. This is a strategy we use throughout the year, both in text-dependent questions and in essays where citations are required. Next week, we will start unit 3 of vocab and begin our study of plot. I use the film The Lion King to model completing a plot diagram, and we then apply this to Number the Stars and the short story students will eventually write. Please make sure permission slips for the film are completed. Thank you! Have a great weekend!
