Next week we will complete our second 5th grade unit, which focuses on multiplying and dividing decimals.  We have prepared for this by looking at some multiplication and division patterns.  We have also talked about using compatible numbers to help us estimate products and quotients and see if our answers are reasonable.  Before our unit tests, we typically take two full class periods to review and synthesize the information, helping the students feel prepared for the test.  The best way to prepare for the test is to put in good effort into each assignment.  We have been talking about the importance of neat and clear work to help students’ accuracy.  It was another productive week of learning!

Science

Students will take a quiz next Tuesday. It will be based on their experiments with pendulums (also called swingers) and notes they copied in their science launch logs.

Language Arts

Lesson 2 Spelling Quiz will be tomorrow, Friday 10/4. The words are posted to my website for easy access. We have continued to study and share opinion writing this week by explaining point of view with reasons and information.  Students are continuing to utilize organizational structures in which ideas are logically grouped to support their opinion. The next Spelling Quiz will be October 18th Lesson 3, including challenge words!

Social Studies

* Tomorrow 10/4 is the Chapter 1, Social Studies test. Students should have been reviewing for this test to be prepared for tomorrow.

We have begun the next lesson Ch. 4 Why Europeans Left for the New World. Students will become Deep Sea Divers and Research Scientists, excavating artifacts from a sunken ship dating back to the Age of Exploration. During class students will be identifying the artifacts and reading about them in their textbooks. Next they will take notes in their Interactive Notebook much like a Research Scientists would in real life. Looking ahead, the test for this Chapter will be on 10/25.
