Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

The following is a curriculum update for the week of October 6-10, 2014.

Religion

Next week we will start Chapter 2, Worshipping God. In this chapter we will explore the beauty in God’s creation. Students will be learning about a man named Chico Mendes who saved that Brazilian Rain Forest from being cut down. A study guide for Chapters 2 & 3 will be passed out on Monday 10/6.

Math

10/6 – Monday, Ch.2, Lesson 3, Powers and Exponents

10/7 – Mass 8:45am

10/8 – Wednesday, Ch. 2, Lesson 4, Multiplication Pattern

10/9 – Thursday, Ch. 3, Lesson 5, Problem Solving Investigation

10/10 – Friday, Check My Progress Quiz Lessons 1-5.

Social Studies

The 5th graders have been working on Chapter 4, Why Europeans Came to the New World. In this chapter students have been investigating artifacts from a sunken explorer ship. They have been categorizing the artifacts into three specific categories. New World Product, New Technology that encouraged exploration, and Motivation for Exploration. Students are working in pairs to complete the interactive notebook. The test for this Chapter is on 10/17.

Science

Students will use the theory of plate tectonics to explain continental drift. They will discover how volcanoes and earthquakes give evidence of plate movement. Students will take a quiz on lessons 1 & 2 next Friday October 10th.

Language Arts

This week in Language Arts students’ spelling focused on the long o and the long i sounds. In grammar students learned about complete subjects and complete predicates as well as compound sentences. Students continued to work with narratives in writing by specifically focusing on the word choice trait and dialogue between characters. Students worked to use precise language in their written dialogue to portray their characters’ personalities and points of view.
